Mary of Nazareth – Sacred Heart
Built in 1877 in Brooklynโs Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhood, the Church of the Sacred Heart is a landmark Gothic Revival structure designed by Thomas F. Houghton, a key figure in 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Serving generations of parishioners, including workers from the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the church later became the primary worship site of Mary of Nazareth Parish.
Beginning in 2023, Zaskorski & Associates Architects led a comprehensive multi-year historic restoration program informed by detailed field investigations, addressing extensive age-related deterioration to the masonry, parapets, roof, stained glass, wood windows, doors, and interior plaster. The project included full faรงade masonry restoration, reconstruction of deteriorated parapets and coping stones, stained glass conservation including the monumental rose window, roof replacement with historically sympathetic materials, waterproofing upgrades, interior stabilization, and lighting enhancements. This holistic preservation effort stabilized the historic envelope while sensitively modernizing key systems, ensuring the church remains a spiritual and architectural anchor for the community for generations to come.
Victoria Consulting & Development was instrumental making this project success.
